Sharks loses 2nd straight

THE Cebu Sharks dropped back-to-back contests after a painful 69-66 loss to Valenzuela Classic in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Cup on July 11, 2019 in Manila.

Cebu started out strong with a 19-8 lead after the opening period. But Valenzuela bounced back with a 29-point second quarter to take over the lead, 37-31, at halftime.

Valenzuela started the fourth with a six-point 54-48 lead. The Classic led by as much as 10 points in the fourth quarter but Cebu hung in there and trimmed it down to just three, 69-66, with a three-pointer by Rhaffy Octobre and a driving layup by William McAloney with less than a minute left.

Cebu had a chance to tie the game after James Varella was called for a travel but Sharks star Patrick Cabahug missed two three-point attempts with 10 seconds left.

Hans Thiele could have sealed the game but he missed both his free throws giving Cebu another opportunity to send it to overtime. However, McAloney missed his shot from beyond the arc with a second remaining. (EKA)
