CPPO Director urges 7 Cebu legislators to help build jails

TO DECONGEST the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC), Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) Director Roderick Mariano has urged seven House representatives in Cebu to help build detention facilities in their respective congressional districts.

In an interview on Thursday, July 11, 2019, Mariano said he has discussed the congestion problems at the CPDRC with Rep. Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco (Cebu, fifth district).

“There’s really a need to build bigger facilities, given CPDRC’s suspension of admission of new inmates. We’re urging Gov. Gwen Garcia and the congressmen to build a bigger facility to at least decongest the CPDRC. A district jail would be the most ideal solution,” he said in mixed Tagalog and English.

Opened in 2004 during Garcia’s earlier stint as governor, the CPDRC was built for 1,600 detainees.

CPDRC is now home to at least 2,500 inmates.

Since August 2018, the facility stopped taking in new inmates until it could address the congestion problem.

Mariano said he has started making rounds of all the correctional facilities in the province to check their conditions.

He also raised the lack of jails with Garcia in a courtesy call at the Capitol last July 4.

Garcia, for her part, said the congestion in the CPDRC is among the top concerns she wants to address.

According to the governor, former fourth district congressman Benhur Salimbangon was able to ask for funds from the National Government for the expansion of district jails under his jurisdiction.

She said the representatives of the seven congressional districts are in the best position to get funds from the National Government.

“I hope that our representatives will also take the cue para makatabang (to be able to help). Kinahanglan man gyud nato ang tabang sa (We really need the help of the) National Government,” Garcia said. (RTF)
