Custodio: On alternate universes

I HAVE a go-to place whenever I get tired of my reality. Don’t get me wrong, I am okay with how things are in my life but there are days when it gets iffy. I am sure you feel this way too at times and you feel the need to escape.

It gets overwhelming at times, to keep doing what we do. Most days we handle things pretty well and we have everything under control right? Still there are days when things just get downright crazy and it’s exasperating! My friend Belle often refers to this as periods when mercury is in retrograde. Yup.

Apparently, during this time, everything that you can think of that might go wrong will go wrong: so you need to be mindful and careful. Eeeeek!

Quite honestly, I don’t fully subscribe to it but it doesn’t hurt to be cautious. It really is all up to the person. I just think that these moments are simply part of our lives. They just happen and well it’s entirely up to you how to respond to them. We can face them head on, but I personally feel that it would be too physically and emotionally taxing to do so all the time, don’t you think? That’s why I have alternate universes. Hehe.

Simply put, these are escape hatches when one’s everyday life gets too demanding and tiring. It’s your emergency ‘breathing space” kit when you feel suffocated with the goings-on around you. It’s where you find your center, your clarity of mind when things go haywire and you find it imperative to disengage from everything, even for just a while. It’s your outlet, your happy pill, your happy place that helps you refocus and regain your balance.

I have two alternate universes, serving different needs. My first being this, being a writer. It has helped me process what’s been going on in my life. It helps me sift through certain personal issues as well as lessons in life so that I can arrive at certain truths that I know will help me deal with similar occurrences in the future. I share these thoughts weekly in this column hoping that at least one person will benefit from it.

My second alternate universe is that of my life as a painter. I paint almost everyday so I guess this is more of a parallel universe. Art calms me and serves as my fastest, most effective getaway when I’m feeling down or stressed. I would like to think that I’m eloquent but when words fail me, my paintings do the talking.

The world we live in can be overwhelming. It does help to find ways to alleviate such negative feelings. Maybe an alternate universe will work for you too!

Happy Sunday! :)
