Fashionable with 'ukay'

UKAY-UKAY or used clothing can make anyone look fashionable, especially if you know how to mix and match fashion pieces, right? Your patience in picking the right ones while rummaging up huge piles of clothes is a must, though.

If you think that only those who do not have enough capacity to buy brand new branded clothes are into ukay, you are wrong.

I asked around and found out that a number of my friends are fun of ukay as well. I got to talk to them and asked them why they choose ukay clothes over brand new ones. Here are their thoughts:

Gem Avanceña-Arenas

"Bukod po sa mura, may some items na talagang okay pa ang quality. And I believe, hindi presyo ang sukatan ng isang damit, nasa nagdadala yan."

For her not to endure the hot temperature while looking for the best pieces, Gem buys ukay online.

In a date with her daughter, Gem wore a top and shorts worth P50 each.

Mafel Joan Negrido-Gamale

Who might have thought that an official of a government agency is a fan of ukay-ukay, too?

With a top worth P50 and a pair of pants for P100, Mafel was all prepared to attend a gathering.

CJ Amor

While on vacation, CJ was looking gorgeous in her photos wearing her "ukay" acid-washed dress, which she got for only P15. Yes, with just that amount, she was able to ace her fashionista look.

Zy Torintera Calamba

With Zyís entry, showing someone in a fab costume, you might not believe that the entire ensemble only costs P50. P10 for the hat, P10 for the dress, and P30 for the boots.

If you want to enjoy such a huge bargain, you may try looking for them at the ukay-ukay stalls along Uyanguren Street or Magsaysay Avenue.

Ruelyn Sabagala Tiangco

Long blouse? The roaming Badjaos carrying used clothes for sale may have the right one for you. Ruelyn got hers for only P30.

Iris Mae Ferraris

For this PR person, price is not the true measure for anyone to look gorgeous and stylish all the time.

When asked why she loves ukay-ukay, Iris had this to say: "Inexpensive, stylish, one-of-a-kind. Plus, rare finds give a sense of achievement and satisfaction each time." She got her leopard blouse from a stall near Gaisano Grand Mall-Ilustre.

Jenny Cameros Canoy

Jen, who is now based abroad, is one of the most fabulous moms I know. Amid her stylish shots are several pieces she got from her favorite ukay hub ñ the Roxas Night Market.

"I was growing up rummaging thrifted clothes, shoes, bags and just anything that I think useful. I find ukay-ukay affordable and trendy. The fashionista in me suits better at the thrifted store without ripping you off."

Giving her a classy with a hint of modern look in the photo is a Gingham Top (P40), Alexander McQueen shoes (P50), and red scarf (P5).
