Distrito calls for urgent interventions vs dengue

BACOLOD City Councilor Simplicia Distrito urged the City Health Office (CHO), Environment and Natural Resources Office (Enro), and the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) to do interventions to stop the increase of dengue patients in the city.

Distrito, chairperson of the City Council Committee on family and child care, said the City Government through the CHO, Enro and DRRMO should come up with intervention programs to be conducted in the barangays such as, information and education campaigns, declogging or fogging operations and other programs that will increase the awareness of the citizens in preventing dengue.

She said from January to June 2019, 477 dengue cases in the City of Bacolod were reported with patients coming mostly from the rural barangays of the city.

ìWe are in the rainy season as of the moment, thus, prevention and mitigation programs should be done as soon as possible considering that the abundance of rain results in a high population of mosquitoes, particularly the ones carrying the dengue virus,î she added.

Distrito disclosed that it is the thrust of the City Government to promote the health and safety of its inhabitants through various programs that will educate and motivate them to be aware.

The City Council also earlier approved a resolution requesting the CHO to intensify anti-dengue operations in all public elementary and secondary schools in the city in order to curtail the growing number of dengue cases.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Renecito Novero, stated that the number of cases as of June 15, 2019, is a 57 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

He said the City Government is mandated to protect the safety and welfare of its people, especially the children and the youth who are deemed to be the hope of our motherland.
