Noynay keeps Asia-Pacific belt in Japan fight

CEBUANO Joe Noynay defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific super featherweight crown with a sixth technical knockout over former Olympian Satoshi Shimizu in Osaka, Japan. Noynay ended the night of Shimizu by stopping him in the 2:18 mark of the sixth.

The 23-year-old Noynay, a native of Bogo City, dropped Shimizu twice in the opening round and continued to batter the 2012 Olympics bronze medalist into submission. Noynay improved to 18-2-1 with 17 knockouts, while the 33-year-old Shimizu suffered his first career defeat and dropped to 8-1 with eight knockouts.

Noynay is currently ranked No. 6 in the WBO, wherein Jamel Herring is the current titleholder. Meanwhile, in the same show, Jonathan Taconing (28-3-1, 22 KOs) lost his bid for a world title after getting knocked out by World Boxing Council light flyweight king Ken Shiro (15-0, 8 KOs). (EKA)
