ONGOING on the third level of Ayala Center Cebu, The Alcoves wing, is an exhibit titled “Pasalamat: Pasundayag” (Thanksgiving: Exhibit) by Cebu Artists Inc. (CAI), marking the group’s 25 years of existence.

In her welcome remarks, CAI president Sonia Yrastorza said the exhibit is “in gratitude for the past 25 years, for overcoming many trials during that time, for everything positive that we have done, (for) the linkages forged, for the many friends, patrons and supporters who have been behind Cebu Artists Inc.”

The early years—recalled exhibit curator Celso Pepito—were particularly trying. It was hard for group members to sell their works, unlike today when Cebu artists had already invaded the Manila market, as well as other parts of the globe.

During the exhibit opening, the three best works—in the eyes of separate sets of judges—were announced. The Peers’ Choice went to Jojo Sagayno’s sandpaper collage, “Abrasive 1.” Jurors Mar Vidal, Gil Maningo and Angelito Pagayon chose John Dinglasa’s “Harvest,” in acrylic on canvas. Darby Vincent Alcoseba’s “At Home,” in oil on canvas, was the choice of the guests of honor at the exhibit opening, namely Becbec Abellana, Armida Caguitla, architect Arsenio Abella, lawyer Deolito Alvarez, lawyer Edison Arriola, Angelito Pagayon, Gerry Paglinawan and Bernard Restificar.

“Pasalamat: Pasundayag” runs until July 27 and features the works of Jonathan Abellana, Lida Maria Aguilar, Darby Vincent Alcoseba, Methuzael Carredo, Cesar and Gina Castillo, Reynan Dingal, Jess Dinglasa, John Dinglasa, Jun Impas, Joseph Ong, Renulo Pautan, Celso Duazo Pepito, Fe Madrid Pepito, Lucilo Jojo Sagayno, Antonio Vidal, Marlone Ylanan and Sonia Yrastorza.

The CAI artists expressed their gratitude to Ayala Center Cebu for the exhibit space they have been allotted, which has made them more active in their artistic endeavors. Some of these artists will soon be exhibiting their works in Metro Manila.
