PUV modernization launched in Oro

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) have launched the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program in Cagayan de Oro City Monday morning, July 15.

The PUV Modernization Program is a flagship initiative of the Duterte administration that envisions a restructured, modern, well-managed and environmentally sustainable public transport sector.

The program also envisions drivers and operators to have stable, sufficient and dignified livelihood while commuters get to their destinations quickly, safely and comfortably.

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade, who was present during the launching at SM City Cagayan de Oro, urged the LTFRB to make sure that everyone in the city will follow the mandate of the PUV Modernization Program.

"Alam nyo, hangarin ng programang ito ay simple lang. Its' the safety and comfort of the riding public. Yung mga mananakay, yung sasakyan, yung mga tsuper dapat ligtas sa sakuna," Tugade said.

"Sa kadahilanang ito, dapat magtulong-tulong tayo, hindi lang ang mga kooperatiba, hindi lang ang mga owners of the public vehicles, kindi pati na ang mga mananakay," he added.

LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra III, for his part, assured that the drivers affected by the modernization of the PUVs will be given assistance, such as skills training and other benefits.

"As we always say sa Department of Transportation, kani sya nga programa, inclusive. Meaning, katong mga maapektuhan nga mga driver, patagaan nato og assistance," Delgra said.

The transition period under the PUV Modernization Program will be on June 2020, according to Delgra.

"Whatever happens, even after that, padayunon nato tanan masulod sa administration Duterte," he said.

Apart from Tugade and Delgra, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno and Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Emano were present during the PUV modernization program launching.
