SWU makes U18 semifinals

SOUTHWESTERN University (SWU-Phinma) defeated the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), 75-63, in the quarterfinals of the Under-18 division in the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) Summer Tournament on Sunday, July 14, 2019 at the SHS-AdC old campus in Gen. Maxilom.

SWU-Phinma grabbed the lead for good in the third period on a 27-20 run anchored on Dezeo Villanueva’s three three-pointers. SWU-Phinma finished the third period with a 60-52 edge and did not let down in the fourth quarter.

Kendall Limana paced SWU-Phinma with 16 points, Villanueva finished with 13 points and Charles Libatog chipped in 12.

John Tanting and Aaron Abunawan scored 14 and 13 points for SHS-AdC.

SWU-Phinma was off to a hot start with an 18-13 lead after the opening quarter, but SHS-AdC responded in the second period to close within one at 33-32 at half time.

It was in the second half that their game spelled the difference for SWU-Phinma, pulling away in the third period.

SWU-Phinma will face the Mt. Olives School of the Philippines in the semifinals.

On the other hand, Batang Mandaragat beat Punta Princessa, 65-53, in another quarterfinals match.

Batang Mandaragat controlled the first half with 32-24 at halftime but Punta Princesa came alive in the third period and trimmed down the deficit to two points, 43-45.

Batang Mandaragat responded in the fourth quarter and stretched the lead to as much as 15 points before the game ended at 65-53.

John Cacafranca canned in 15 points for Batang Mandaragat, while teammate James Llenes pitched in 11 points. James Cabatigatan finished with a game-high 19 points while Joshua Canoy tallied 11 points in a losing effort.

Batang Mandaragat will face the Sisters of Mary School (SMS-Boystown) Aloysians in the semifinals. RSC
