Basilan jail inmate hurt in gun attack

A PROVINCIAL jail inmate was wounded while five others were unscathed in a drive-by gun attack in the province of Basilan, the police said Tuesday, July 16.

Police Lieutenant Colonel William Gadayan, Isabela City police chief, said the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Monday in San Rafael village, Isabela City, the capital of Basilan.

Gadayan identified the victim as Hail Kamsa Ahamadi, 20, an inmate of the Basilan provincial jail facing murder charge in a court in Isabela City.

The victim suffered bullet wound in the neck and was taken to the Basilan General Hospital for treatment.

He said the victim was aboard the provincial jail’s vehicle together with five other inmates and escorted by five jail guards when shot by one of two men riding on a motorcycle that tailed them.

Gadayan said they were en route to the provincial jail coming from the justice hall in Isabela City at the time of the incident.

He said two jail guards aboard a motorcycle chased but failed to catch the suspects who sped towards Sitio Mabarakat in Aguada village and then to Sumagdang village. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
