Del Rosario: Growing your business and career the right way

LAST July 13, 2019, I was privileged to be part of a line-up of thought-provocative speakers at the “Growth Summit” organized by a fellow Toastmaster, Chris Dao-anis. He has gone a long way in his career since he shifted from the accounting profession and focused on communication, training and life-coaching.

He assigned me the topic on “Growing your business/career the right way.”

I felt that my sharing from the business perspective could very well be helpful for enhancing one’s career, with just a minor tweak.

Initially, I felt that only the Sys, the Tans, the Tys, the Villars, the Ayalas, the Aboitizes, and the people in their league who have the right to share about such a topic. But as I prepared my talk, I could easily mention a big number of Baguio people who could share their stories and inspire others to be “successful” in growing their businesses.

Four things I shared that might help professionals and businessmen grow their careers and businesses are:

1. Character

I traced character to its roots in the values we believe in. Why? Because values determine our thoughts; our thoughts affect our feelings, and our feelings affect our behavior. Our repeated behavior forms our habits, which become our character. And as they say, character determines our destiny.

I shared the core values that my parents taught me (some of which I still have to work on): faith in God, Integrity, hard work, thriftiness, humility, simplicity, love and respect for elders and for others, etc.

I added the “more sophisticated” sounding values I learned through my association with McDonald’s and thru my years at Sunshine and Veniz: initiative, excellence, dedication and commitment, productivity, professionalism, persistence and perseverance.

These are values each of us need to work on and enhance to help us succeed in life, have peace of mind, build trust, and earn the respect of others.

2. Competence

Competence comes from knowledge. And knowledge when applied increases competence. Yes, skills are enhanced thru practice and consistently striving for excellence.

Thus, trainings are necessary for growth, and helpful in reminding ourselves to get back on track when we go astray.

A favorite bible verse I like to quote is Proverbs 22.29: “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings, not before obscure men.”

3. People

I have not heard of a growing business that is run by one person only. He will always be dependent and rely on other people, whether as employees, associates, or in a supplier or service provider capacity.

As I have learned thru the years, people do not care about what you know, unless they know that you care. That is one vital component in building trust. And being trusted is a key element to being able to lead and influence people.

Treat your people with respect and treat them fairly.

Finding people you can trust is like finding a valuable treasure. Be that treasure to others, too.

Enhance their skills and increase their competence. It takes time, but it is always worth the effort. Even if they leave you, you have helped make the world a better place if you have helped people grow in wisdom, skills, and character.

4. Systems

I first heard of the word “systems,” in the way I now espouse it, some 30 years ago from my first business consultant at McDonald’s, Ma’am Marilyn Reyna. She used it to remind and correct me. I hated the word each time she mentioned it. How wrong and stupid I was. I wish I listened earlier to her and kept it to heart immediately. It would have saved me years of “firefighting” and needless “customer recovery” acts.

For the past years, I have been repeatedly talking about it to our teams and trying to develop this mindset of building systems. I have two partnered acronyms to help everyone see the benefits of establishing systems and ensuring their compliance: MYJE. MEJE. The acronyms stand for “Make Your Job Easier. Make Everyone’s Job Easier.”

Systems MYJE. MEJE.

And only when systems are in place, that duplication and growth can be done easier and with less difficulty.

My dearest fellow business enthusiasts and professionals, I salute all of you who have knowingly or unknowingly practiced or used these four “tools” in growing your businesses. I simply gave a “name” to what you may have been unconsciously doing thru the years to achieve the level of “success” in growing your businesses.

I salute you.

May all praise and glory be to God!
