FIVE members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) have surrendered to military authorities in Central Mindanao as they were already tired of hiding, the military said Friday, July 19.
Major Arvin John Encinas, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) spokesperson, said the five BIFF surrendered to the Army’s 90th Infantry Battalion at 3:40 p.m. Thursday in the province of Maguindanao.
Encinas did not release the identities of the five BIFF surrenderers, who are residents of the village of Gadungan, Talitay, Maguindanao province. They belong to the BIFF-Karialan faction.
He said they yielded two Garand rifles, a caliber .45 pistol, a Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher, a 60-mm mortar with corresponding ammunition.
He said the surrender of the five BIFF members was through the efforts of the 90th Infantry Battalion’s Alpha Company in coordination with Mayor Abdulwahab Sabal of Talitay, Maguindanao.
Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana, Westmincom chief, has commended the troops for facilitating the successful surrender of the BIFF members.
“Your hard work has paid off,” Sobejana said.
“We are also very thankful to the positive gesture of support and cooperation of our stakeholders and the civilians in our journey of bringing long and lasting peace in the Westmincom’s joint area of operations,” he added. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
