Solon: Raising healthy children: Incorporating movement

IT’S always challenging nowadays to lead a healthy life. There are fewer places for play, and more often than not the traffic is a hurdle to get to somewhere. For our convenience, we might as well sit at home and enjoy watching TV or playing with our gadgets. We, older ones, long for the good old days where we can play in the streets safely. So how do we get our children moving?

Get them in a sports club in school

I think this is the most convenient way to get it done. From their school, they can just practice their sport there and they can be fetched afterward. We still believe that our educational institutions have a huge role to play in the wellness and health of our children.

Enroll the children in weekend classes

Sports classes are not solely reserved for the summer. They should be year-round! If schools don’t offer clubs, you can get your children moving by having them attend sports classes in the weekend. Karate, dance and obstacle course racing are offered all over Cebu!

Bring them outdoors

Hikes, walks around the hills are great! We used to go around Foressa Mountain Trails and go for at least a two-hour hike.

Parents should lead the way

More often than not, children mirror their parents. I think if parents cared for the health and wellness of their children, they must also invest in theirs as well.

These are simple strategies to get kids moving and healthy. I’m sure there are a lot more. But overall, the message is, if we don’t start with our children’s health now, there may be hazards to poor health later on in their adult lives. So get them started now and as parents, our role is to inspire them and guide them in the right direction.
