PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, July 22, directed the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and other local officials in Metro Manila to reclaim public roads to address the perennial traffic problem in the metropolis.
"I reiterate my directive, my request, my pleading to the MMDA and all concerned local officials and all concerned local officials in Metro Manila and other cities to undertake immediate actions to ensure the speedy and smooth flow of land traffic," he said during his fourth State of the Nation Address (Sona).
"Reclaim all public roads that are being used for private ends. Marami diyan (There are many of them)," he added, as he acknowledged that some public roads have been closed to traffic in favor of some constituents.
The Philippines is losing P3.5 billion a day because of traffic congestion in Metro Manila, according to a study conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency in partnership with the National Economic and Development Authority.
Duterte also told Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año to suspend local officials who would defy the order.
"I ask Secretary Año to see to it that this is enforced. If there is a mayor or a governor or kung sinong demonyo ka, i-suspend mo, Sir Año (If there is a mayor or a governor or whoever evil who will not follow, suspend him Sir Año)," he said.
"Give him time and if he is not up to it, pagpahingahin mo na lang (just suspend him). Suspend mo na. Wala tayong magawa (We cannot do anything but suspend him). They just keep on pleasing their own constituents," the President added. (SunStar Philippines)
