Tell it to SunStar: Drug war victims deserve justice

CARRYING a boat fashioned to symbolize expediency needed by families joining the #LayagNgKatarungan, a net hangs down displaying pictures of victims of Duterte’s vicious drug war.

There is a huge difference between a supposed “strong arm” against illegal drugs and what has been happening in the Philippines: so many of the victims are young children, persons chosen randomly to meet quotas, victims of planted evidence, and even “palit ulo” of supposed targets. And as much as we all want for the problems of drug use and small-time dealing to be addressed in poor communities, these kinds of shoot-to-kill “nanlaban” scenarios and blatant assassinations are criminal.

These violations of human rights are clearly perpetrated against the poor. Even those who believed Duterte would resolve the drug problem must concede that the spilling of blood has been concentrated in poor communities. We can see that Duterte has not delivered on his goal to bring down drug lords and distributors. He hasn’t stopped the flow of drugs into the country.

In the theme of the United People’s State of the Nation Address (Sona), the group also reflected on the roles of China and Duterte in the nation’s drug problems.

Rise Up for Life and for Rights is committed to exerting every effort to help the families speed toward justice.
