With the advancement of gadgets, climate change, and even food consumption mixed with the change of human lifestyle, is one of the main causes for the poor eyesight.

Experts recommend to have your eyes checked on a regular basis by an optometrist or other eye care health professional.

But as the saying goes, "prevention is better than cure", here are some tips to maintain a healthy eyes.

Always have your eyes examined

Make it a point to have a regular appointment with your optometrists for a comprehensive dilated eye examination. You might think your vision is fine or that your eyes are healthy, but visiting your eye care professional for a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to really be sure. When it comes to common vision problems, some people don't realize they could see better with glasses or contact lenses.

Eat right to protect your sight

Too much blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol level hampers your eyesight. Carrots may be a perfect for a good eyesight, but eating fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens is a perfect diet. Eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, are also good for your eyes.

Wear protective eyewear

Wear a hat and sunglasses when you are outdoors. Ultraviolet light can cause damage to your eyes and, in the long term, lead to eye conditions such as cataracts.

Quit smoking or never start

Smoking doesn't only damage the lungs, it also deteriorates eyesight, as nicotine blocks the blood vessels that supply blood and nutrients to your eyes. Research has linked smoking to an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness.

Take regular breaks when working in front of your computer

Excess exposure to computer and mobile phone screen could exhaust your eyes, that you would tend to forget to blink. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This can help reduce eyestrain.

Make sure you have proper lighting

Reading in a low lighted or dark area could damage your eyes. Excess lighting could also destroy your retina. Always make it a point to position proper lighting in your reading reference or while working at the computer.

Clean your hands and your contact lenses properly

Washing your hands properly would lessen the risk of infection. Wash your hands thoroughly before putting in or taking out your contact lenses. Make sure to disinfect contact lenses as instructed and replace them as appropriate.
