Body of dead ‘robber’ found hanging from coastal road bridge

RESIDENTS of Sitio Isla Verde, Barangay San Isidro, Talisay City had a rude awakening on Monday, July 22, 2019.

They found a dead man hanging from the bridge on the Cebu South Coastal Road. He had been shot several times. His body was covered in blood. Masking tape covered his face. His hands were tied behind his back. A sign was placed over his head that read, “Ayaw ko sunda, tulisan ko (Don’t follow in my footsteps. I’m a robber).”

Police said his name was Renante Otero and that he was a 44-year-old resident of Sitio Ilang-Ilang in the same barangay.

Police said Otero was involved in the illegal drug trade and linked to several crimes in the area.

Recovered from the scene were nine empty shells from a 9mm and a .45 pistol.

Residents said they were awakened by the sound of gunfire around 3 a.m., but they didn’t go out to check because they were afraid.

When daylight came, they saw the hanging body. They were able to identify Otero from the tattoo on his right arm and leg.

San Isidro Barangay Captain Adelaida Restauro said Otero and his family suddenly disappeared after a spate of robberies and burglaries in the area.

She said the victim was a resident of Sitio Isla Puwa, not Ilang-Ilang. Neighbors had not seen him for several months until last Monday morning, she said.

Otero was first arrested for robbery in Cebu City in February 2017.

P/Capt. Nazarino Emia, deputy chief of the Talisay City Police Station, said they had been looking for Otero, who was in their drug list.

He said they have yet to determine the motive for his killing.

Gunfight

A few hours later in Cebu City, a still unidentified man died after he exchanged fire with members of the Parian Police Station conducting a checkpoint on Imus Road.

Based on initial investigation, the victim, who was between 30 and 40 years old, was about to rob Greggy Senining, 34, a softdrink agent. The latter had just gotten inside his van after collecting payment from customers in Barangay Lorega San Miguel and was about to leave.

“The suspect was allegedly a known robber in the area. Some residents said he was also a resident of Barangay Lorega San Miguel. However, we are still waiting for his family members to confirm his identity,” said P/Capt. Armando Labora, head of the Parian Police Station.

According to Labora, a team of eight policemen who were conducting a checkpoint, as part of security measures for President Rodrigo Duterte’s fourth State of the Nation Address on Monday, noticed a commotion in the area around 11:45 a.m.

“When they approached the van, they found the suspect holding a gun. The suspect was able to run into the interior portion of the barangay. He pointed his gun at one of our members. He then tried to stop a car which he planned to use as an escape vehicle, but the police were able to corner him. A shootout ensued and he was shot,” Labora said.

Labora said the man was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Labora said the suspect’s firearm will undergo a ballistic examination. (from ANV of SuperBalita Cebu/PJB, WBS)
