A LOCAL food manufacturing firm and a coffee farming community from Cebu were awarded as Central Visayas’ best during the 2019 National Science and Technology Week by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Mandaue’s Nutricious, the product brand of Feb20 Enterprises, was hailed as Region 7 Best Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (Setup) Adoptor for 2019.
The firm received a P20,000 cash award.
Tuburan Coffee, on the other hand, was awarded as the Best in Region 7 for the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (Cest) program of the DOST.
Tristan Abando, DOST Cebu Provincial Director, said the awards represented the growing adoption of technology in the region which helps companies and communities in keeping up with technology disruptions in the market.
“DOST Cebu hopes that with the exemplary performance of Feb20 Enterprises and Tuburan Coffee, more enterprises and communities in Cebu will embrace science, technology and innovation for their sustainable growth and development,” Abando said.
The awarding ceremony was held at the World Trade Center, Pasay City on July 21, 2019.
Setup program adoptor
Setup provides micro, small and medium enterprises with technology upgrading and technical assistance to enable them to increase sales and production, streamline and improve overall operations, upgrade the quality of products and services and conform to national and international standards of excellence.
DOST Cebu said the program upgraded the polvoron processing technologies of Feb20 Enterprises to increase its production capacity and improve its product quality.
The upgrade covered the automation of the roasting, sifting, mixing, molding and packaging stages in the production of polvoron.
Setup also provided interventions for the improvement of its product quality, packaging and labeling and compliance to Good Manufacturing Practices guidelines.
According to the DOST, these interventions resulted in the increase in the production volume by 50 percent, reduction of batch processing time by 50 percent and generation of additional employment of two workers.
Feb20 Enterprises is the processor of Mandaue’s Nutricious brand providing high-quality and highly nutricious polvoron, peanut butter, masareal, chocolate and ready-to-eat champorado.
Cest program awardee
The Tuburan coffee farming community, on the other hand, was recognized by the DOST for its initiatives in establishing a community-based coffee farming and processing industry that produced the first homegrown and home-brewed ground coffee of Cebu, the Tuburan coffee.
“The Tuburan coffee development initiative is also a testament of how a coherent and synergistic inter-agency collaboration can provide maximum impact to the community,” Abando said.
Tuburan Coffee received a plaque of recognition and a grant of P200,000 to be used for more community-based technology interventions.
DOST’s Cest program aims to empower the poorest and most depressed communities in the country, through science and technology interventions in health and nutrition, water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, livelihood/economic enterprise development and disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
Made from 100 percent robusta coffee variety, the product prides itself in its rich taste and rich aroma that is at par with other best quality coffees in the country.
This pride of Tuburan, Cebu has provided livelihood to over 1,000 farmers from 16 mountain barangays in Tuburan.
