CEBU City Police Office Director Gemma Vinluan has defended her personnel who killed a suspected robber on M.J. Cuenco Ave. in Barangay Tejero on Monday morning, July 22, 2019.
The three personnel of the Parian Police Station did the right thing in neutralizing the suspect, who was later identified as Roger Almodel, according to Vinluan.
The police official praised the three police officers, but she did not divulge their names.
There was no overkill in the incident as the suspect resisted arrest and engaged the responding officers in a shootout, Vinluan said.
The Parian cops just happened to pass by the area where there was a robbery taking place, she said.
A police officer witnessing such an incident would act on his instincts to subdue the suspect, according to Vinluan.
Almodel, a resident of Barangay Lorega San Miguel, succumbed to three gunshot wounds. He was brought to the hospital before he was declared dead.
Parian Police Station Chief Armando Labora said a relative identified Almodel, reportedly a troublemaker in his neighborhood.
The 23-year-old suspect was about to rob softdrinks salesman Greggy Senining, 34, when the police noticed him.
Labora said Almodel’s features fit the descriptions made by previous robbery victims in the area.
“Usually, he wore a jacket with a hood and used a .45 pistol,” he said.
Labora said his investigators would check if Almodel had ties with drug and robbery groups. (from AYB of SuperBalita Cebu/KAL/WBS)
