Tumuran: Why pay for braids in Dahican?

THE answer: You are sending young girls to school.

In between work, I met Grace, 10, in Lane’s Kalapyahan, one of the beach resorts in Barangay Dahican, City of Mati, Davao Oriental.

She approached me and asked, “Pa-salapid ka te?” Salapid means braids. She charges P50 per person. I did not haggle.

She managed to do multiple cornrows, a crisp pulled-back look that keeps my hair out of my face, in less than 10 minutes. I also paid for Yanna and chose cornrows pigtail for her.

Grace shared that she learned how to braid because of her friends. She saw how they earn money because of it.

In regular days, she gets P300. However, she receives more during weekends, holidays, or summer events like Summerfrolic where she earns as much as P1,800.

“I use the money to buy food in school. I also buy school supplies for projects. I no longer ask money from my parents because I am earning here,” she said in the vernacular.

It’s inspiring to hear something like this from a young girl. I pray that she continues to be an independent and hardworking woman someday.

I know P50 is too pricey for a braid, but if you would think how much food she can buy for herself in school or how many projects she can do with that — it’s totally worth it.

So next time you visit one of the beach resorts in Brgy. Dahican, approach a young lady who offers braiding services so we can be of help.
