3 motives eyed behind murder of hanged ‘robber’

MISUNDERSTANDING with his fellow robbers might have hastened the death of suspected thief Reynato Otero, whose body was found hanging from a bridge in Barangay San Isidro, Talisay City, Cebu on Monday morning, July 22, 2019.

This was one of the three motives— the others being complicated love affairs and involvement in the illegal drug trade—offered by the city police as possible reasons for Otero’s murder as its investigators have yet to identify the perpetrators.

The robbery group that reportedly included Otero often carried out their operations in the cities of Talisay, Naga and Cebu, and in the town of Minglanilla.

Otero had been in and out of jail because of his involvement in several robbery cases before he was murdered, police said.

Talisay City Police Station Chief P/Maj. Orlando Carag Jr. described the group’s method: the robbers ride a public utility jeepney (PUJ) in Naga City.

After stealing cash and valuables from their victims, the culprits disembark and ride on a motorcycle driven by their cohort.

The Talisay police are now searching for the robbers, Carag said.

Investigators also learned that Otero had fathered children with three women.

Carag said one of the women possibly held a grudge against Otero after learning that the victim had several lovers in his life.

Otero had also been included in the list of active drug personalities in Talisay City, according to Carag.

When Otero’s body was pulled up the bridge, police saw several gunshot wounds. Masking tape covered his face and his hands were tied behind his back. Residents heard gunshots early Monday morning before they found Otero. (from FMD of SuperBalita Cebu/KAL)
