CAGAYAN de Oro City Second District Representative Rufus Rodriguez is seeking to prolong the term of office of district representatives and elected local officials for one year and cut the senator's term by two years.

Rodriguez pushed for the amendments of certain provisions of the 1987 Constitution in a House Concurrent Resolution 1, which he filed early this month.

"Recent events show that it is imperative that reforms be introduced in the present Constitution for it to be responsive to the exigencies of the times, including the need to provide a long-term solution to the decade-old conflict in Mindanao and to spur economic regional development in the countryside, and provide impetus to much needed socioeconomic and political reforms," part of the resolution reads.

Also under the legislative measure, senators will have more diversified and regional representations in the Senate, since the voting will be based on regional divisions. Each region will have three elected senators voted by the people.

The regions are National Capital Region, Northern Luzon, Southern Luzon, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Southern Mindanao and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region. This would result in having a new 27-member Senate as compared to the current 24 seats.

"Ang mga senators botaran na sa mga region para tanan region naay representation. Three senators per region," Rodriguez said.

But their term of office is shortened to four years instead of six years but limited to three consecutive terms.

For members of the House of Representatives, their term of office will be four years but limited to three consecutive terms.

Local elective officials such as mayors and governors shall also serve four years with similar term limit of three consecutive terms.

"Kung madugangan ang tuig, dako ang panahon nga makatrabaho, makaserbisyo sa katawhan kay short ra ang three years," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez was elected as chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Amendments after his comeback in the House of Representatives.

He said his first legislative measure will be discussed once the selection members of the committee is completed.

"Hulatan sa nato ang uban members then tukion na dayon kini ug ma-approve sa House ipadala na dayon sa Senate then plebescite na dayon," Rodriguez said.
