EXCITING tricks await Dabawenyos when the DC x Grind 1st Kadayawan Skate Competition unfurls on August 17 at the Davao City Skate Park.

Skate technical director Mae Sanchez, during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at The Annex of SM City Davao Thursday, July 25, said, “Hoping that this would just be a start as we support the Davao Skate Council (DSC) to promote the thrust of the city sports office to hone the children into skateboarding.”

The event, which features the intermediate and advanced categories, is also in partnership with the Davao Digital Influencers.

An elimination round is set on August 3 for the intermediate category where qualifiers will advance to the main tournament that stakes cash prizes and gift certificates to the winners. Top Mindanao skaters will give Dabawenyos a stiff challenge.

Manila skater June Castor, Cagayan de Oro City’s Dalton Bautista, and Davao’s Joey Betita are the judges.

Sanchez also said the skate park is fast becoming a tourist spot as more and more people take their photos at the facility aside from trying to learn the new sport.

The former empty lot that used to be a parking space for tricycle drivers and dumpsite for unused carton boxes, was transformed into an Olympic-standard skate park adorned with colorful graffiti and wall arts symbolizing the city’s diverse culture.

Asian Games women’s skateboarding gold medalist Margielyn Didal of Cebu City, however, has yet to try the new park. Sanchez said they have not tried connecting with Didal. The latter was invited by the City Government of Davao before to grace the opening of the skate park but it did not push through as planned. (MLSA)
