THE goal of remedial reading is to dramatically reduce the number of students who have extreme difficulty learning to read and write.

“Today is a great start to make a change,” said Janice D. Montalvo, Matina District reading coordinator, when asked about her advocacy on reading. She mentioned about teaching children to read and helping them to overcome their learning difficulties.

“Every school intensifies its reading program to make every child a reader. Remedial programs are designed to close the gap between what a student knows and what he’s expected to know. Considering that each child is unique and capable to learn, every reading teacher should consider the learners’ needs to know where to start. That is why, every start of the school year, they are being assessed then tracked of their reading progress. Reading remedial comes in,” she added.

The term remedial refers to correcting or improving deficient skills in a specific subject. Thus, remedial reading is a change in instruction that helps remedy a weakness in the area of reading.

The goal of remedial reading is to dramatically reduce the number of students who have extreme difficulty learning to read and write. Remedial reading is a highly effective short-term intervention of tutoring struggling readers in both an individualized and small group setting.

It is essential for a remedial teacher to understand thoroughly the strengths and weaknesses of their pupils so that appropriate teaching approaches can be adopted to meet their individual needs.

It is in this note that teachers should also be capacitated with the reading strategies, approaches and activities so that they can utilize the right intervention for their children. It would then be a challenge to every teacher to make their learners become proficient readers at the end of the school year. (Marie Iris B. Maquindang/DepEd-Matina District)
