Rehab of Bacolod public markets eyed through PPP

THE Bacolod City Council urged City Mayor Evelio Leonardia to form a technical working group to study the possibility of rehabilitating the city public markets and the Manokan Country through the public-private partnership (PPP) scheme.

Councilor Carl Lopez, who authored a resolution last week, said several public markets in the city and the Manokan Country need thorough rehabilitation.

He cited the Central Market, Libertad Market, Burgos Market.

The technical working group shall be composed by the City Administrator’s Office, City Engineer’s Office, and the City Planning and Development Office.

Lopez, chairperson of the City Council committee on environment, noted that it is imperative that the study conducted by the said technical working group be submitted to the appropriate committee for appreciation.

Lopez pointed out that the public market is a significant economic enterprise which is expected to provide additional revenue to the city.

“Rehabilitation of the most basic public infrastructure such as public markets will result to the improvement of the well-being of the vendors, and consumers, let alone the constituents of Bacolod,” Lopez said.

Lopez disclosed that operating and managing safe and clean public markets is one of the mandates of the city government.
