Mactan Rock awaits Lapu’s approval for 5K cu.m. water supply proposal

BULK water supplier Mactan Rock Industries Inc. (MRII) is now awaiting the nod from the new administration of Lapu-Lapu City for its proposal to supply 5,000 cubic meters (cu.m) of water per day to the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD).

This as the Cebu-based firm also signed earlier this month a joint venture agreement with MCWD to supply 10,000 cu.m of water per day coming from the Cotcot River in Compostela, Cebu, MRII chairman Antonio Tompar told the press in an interview Saturday, July 27, 2019.

Tompar expressed optimism his company would get the green light from Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan on the water supply proposal, which would benefit the residents.

According to Tompar, the water supply will be sourced from the company’s desalination plants which are already installed in Lapu-Lapu City.

In October 2017, MCWD approved and awarded the project to MRII. However, the company’s proposal hasn’t taken off yet pending approval from the local government.

The project is expandable to 10,000 cu.m. per day, Tompar said.

MRII had offered the lowest price to MCWD at P40 per cu.m. compared to other bidders’ whose water prices were at P57 and P80 per cu.m., he said.

Tompar noted that his water supply is cheaper because he already has existing desalination plants in Mactan.

“The technology and the equipment are already in place,” he added.

MRII is also supplying water to big resorts and hotels on the island.

As to the Compostela water deal, Tompar expects the delivery of additional water to MCWD before the year ends, which should eventually benefit the northern areas of Cebu.

Mactan Rock has a 2,000 cu.m. per day sea water system installed in Mabolo, Cebu City which supplies SM City Cebu, Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu and APM Mall.

Cebu, which has seen enormous economic development in recent years, continuously needs additional supply of water.

The expanding economic activity and growing population are driving the demand for water as industrial and residential consumption rise.

MCWD, the main water supplier in the metro area, had projected 43,000 cu.m. of additional water supply in 2020 in order to meet the fast growing demand for water in Metro Cebu. (CSL)
