Quibranza: Redemption songs

WHAT if you had the chance to share the gift of hope with people who are on the brink of losing it? What if you could steer society into caring better for the next generation? Well, now you have the chance to accomplish both, just by supporting a simple stage play.

“Ang Anino sa Kagahapon” (Shadow of the Past) aims to capture the realities of a child in conflict with the law (CICL) as it specifically narrates the incidents in a CICL’s life that brought him to where he is, as well as depicts situations and people that can help change the CICL for the better.

“Ang Anino sa Kagahapon,” conceived from the “Act It Out” project spearheaded by the Magone Home Aftercare Program (MHAP) Peace Corps volunteer John Paul Dorrett and MHAP team lead Abelardo “Abby” Banuag, is creatively directed by 2TinCans Philippines Inc. The songs were written and composed by Banuag himself; the tracks recorded and produced at Kalye Musika Recording Studio.

According to Banuag, the stage play’s main objective is to “deliver a message regarding the lives of children in conflict with the law (CICL) in order for the audience to be able to gain an insight into what brought the CICL to such a life.”

“Such understanding will hopefully help combat stigmatization and offer a better perspective regarding children in conflict with the law, one which puts prejudice aside and offers a second chance for them,” Banuag said.

The play will cast the trainees of the MHAP (children in conflict with the law), staff of the Magone Home and Don Bosco Boys’ Home, children from Don Bosco Boys’ Home (children at risk), and other school children.

“Ang Anino sa Kagahapon” will be on Aug. 2 and 3, with matinee and gala shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively, at the auditorium of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation in Lahug, Cebu City.

The play is “a means of educating others regarding children in conflict with the law. Such understanding will bring about acceptance and more opportunities to help these young individuals have a second chance in life. This second chance in life will hopefully help them become good, honest and useful citizens of our society,” Banuag added.
