Paintings of late Kapampangan artist on exhibit in Tarlac

LOCAL art enthusiasts will have a chance to see majority of the works of the late surreal painter Perfecto Mercado on August 5 at the Museo ng Tarlac in an exhibit that serves as a coming home tour for the artist’s great works.

The tribute exhibit, dubbed “Dreamscapes: The Art of Perfecto Mercado,” is organized in cooperation with the Provincial Government of Tarlac and Tarlac Tourism. The exhibit will run until August 23.

There will also be a book signing for people who would like to acquire the book on Mercado’s life and works.

Mercado was credited as among the most senior contemporary painters in the local provincial scene and had established a name for himself and his art among artists in Metro Manila.

Mercado did not start out as a surrealist painter, and like any other Kapampangan painters at the time when genre paintings were in great commercial value during the early decades of the Americans in Clark Field, he had always been a realist.

He was a copy artist for a long time – even spending some of his years as a graphic artist who manually painted huge movie billboards. The late artist soon became enthralled with surreal paintings upon returning to the Philippines after long years of working abroad.

His works have influenced local artists here and have found their way into collections of big universities and schools in Pampanga, Angeles City and Metro Manila, as well as into the list of private collectors.
