Balamban Liempo adds spice to the menu

BALAMBAN Liempo continues to add to its growing line of products with its latest addition, the BL spicy.

Served in two variants—Spicy Liempo and Spicy Chicken—these are answers to its loyal patrons’ numerous requests to add spicy selections to the menu. Founders Jojo and Honey Vergara, who established the brand in July 2009, didn’t just want to incorporate it to the menu without research involved.

“It was not as simple as just throwing a bunch of chilis into the liempo and chicken. We had to find the perfect blend that would complement our distinct flavor,” shared Jojo. “We also wanted to use local products that are within reach.”

All things considered, what was most important was getting the right amount of spiciness that will entice those who love all things spicy, while still appealing to those who aren’t really into the spicy side but willing to try something new. The brand has long been known for its herb-infused liempo inspired by a method common in the town of Balamban. It initially started out as a takeout business that grew through word of mouth. It currently has more than a hundred stores, some branches catering to dine-in customers.

From its hole-in-the-wall beginnings, the brand has come a long way and has reached its 10-year mark this month, along with receiving the award for SunStar Best of Cebu 2018’s “Best Liempo” recognition. They joined other winners who showcased their brands during the SunStar Best of Cebu 2018 party last July 10. In celebration of this milestone was the launch of the BL spicy as well as a trip to Abucayan, a town in Balamban—and Honey’s hometown—to feed 500 kids there.

As of now, the BL spicy is available at its Panagdait branch but will soon be available in majority of its branches.
