Baguio lawmaker moves to stop Edsa bus ban

BAGUIO Representative Mark Go is pushing for a congressional inquiry into the provincial bus ban.

“Today, we have again filed House Resolution (HR) 133 directing a congressional inquiry on the provincial bus ban and relocation of bus terminals from Edsa to Valenzuela, Parañaque and Sta. Rosa, Laguna," Go said.

The lawmaker said in Metro Manila Development Authority's recent announcement that they will conduct another dry run on the second week of August 2019 before its full implementation.

"I appreciate the intent of our fellow public servants in MMDA. This representation is not opposed to progress. We are not opposed to the idea that change is essential in order to facilitate proper order. But, let us first iron out details of this project," Go added.

Go said commuters have suffered too much from the problem with traffic.

"But I am afraid that without first settling the immediate concerns of our commuters, this plan may do more harm than good," he said.

Go’s resolution sought to conduct a congressional inquiry on the bus ban. He pointed out that based on the records of the MMDA, of the estimated 300,000 to 400,000 vehicles traversing Edsa, only two percent are provincial buses.

The lawmaker added that there is lack of appropriate and adequate transport options and infrastructure that would bring the commuters from Valenzuela to their work or school.

This would result in more city buses, jeepneys, taxis, and private vehicles, replacing provincial buses along Edsa, and ultimately clogging the busy avenue even more.

"Commuters have to bear the additional expenses and travel time incurred for the additional transfers during commute. PUVs that would transport the commuters should first be properly set up first before pushing through with the implementation of the relocation plan," Go added.

Go said a public hearing was held in May 21 and the planned June 1 implementation was suspended.
