Peñalosa wants to see Mayweather-Pacquiao 2

FORMER world champion Gerry Peñalosa hopes his close friend Manny Pacquiao did just enough to lure unbeaten American boxing icon Floyd Mayweather Jr. out of retirement for a much-anticipated rematch.

“He was very impressive,” said Peñalosa of Pacquiao’s performance against Keith Thurman last July 21 (PHL time) in Las Vegas. “Manny (Pacquiao) is still very good. I hope Mayweather comes back for a rematch.”

Pacquiao dropped Thurman in the first round and walked away with a split decision win, making him the oldest welterweight champion in history at 40 years old.

Peñalosa, a two-division world champion, feels that Mayweather Jr. could be forced to return to the ring because of the huge money at stake in a very lucrative rematch with Pacquiao.

“I think he’ll come back if he needs the money,” he said.

Mayweather Jr. reportedly earned a huge purse of $180 million in his first fight with Pacquiao in 2015. The Filipino boxing icon, on the other hand, took home a $120 million dollar payday.

Mayweather Jr. beat Pacquiao by unanimous decision.

The 42-year-old Mayweather Jr. followed that win with a retirement fight against Andre Berto, who he beat by unanimous decision. Apparently that wasn’t the last fight of Mayweather Jr. as he made a ring comeback in 2017 to fight UFC star Conor McGregor. He stopped the brash Irish in 10 rounds, announcing that it would be his last fight.

However, Mayweather Jr. couldn’t stay retired as he fought Japanese kickboxing and MMA star Kenshin Nasukawa in what he said was an exhibition. He dropped Nasukawa thrice and stopped him in the opening round.

According to Peñalosa, if Mayweather Jr. won’t return to fight, then Pacquiao should face either Amir Khan or Danny Garcia.

“I think Danny Garcia and Amir Khan for easier fights,” he said. EKA
