MWSS chief transferred to JBC; ex-military man appointed to MWSS

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has transferred Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) chairman Franklin Demonteverde to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) and appointed another former military official to the state water regulator.

Based on the list of appointments released by the Palace on Wednesday, July 31, Duterte named Demonteverde as an ad interim member of the JBC, a body constitutionally tasked to recommend appointees to the judiciary.

Demonteverde, a retired judge, represents the Integrated Bar of the Philippines to the JBC.

Meantime, Duterte appointed retired lieutenant general Emmanuel Salamat as board member of the MWSS.

Salamat served as the former chief of the Armed Forces Northern Luzon Command.

In June, Duterte announced his plan to let Salamat lead the MWSS.

The list of appointments also showed that Reynaldo Velasco, a retired police general, returned to the MWSS as a board member.

Velasco was replaced by retired Army general Ricardo Morales who was later appointed as the new head of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation after his appointment at MWSS expired on June 30.

In June, Velasco said he wuld assume Demonteverde's post as MWSS chairman.

Duterte signed the appointment papers of Demonteverde, Salamat, and Velasco on July 29.

Their appointments were made following the recent water crisis in parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces. (SunStar Philippines)
