PEOPLE talk about...

* RESUMPTION OF LOTTO. The lifting of the suspension order that padlocked PCSO-supervised gambling outlets was announced Wednesday (July 31) and took effect on the same day. It covered seven kinds of lotto games (Lotto 6/42, Mega Lotto 6/45, Super Lotto 6/49, Grand Lotto 6/55, Ultra Lotto 6/58, and Suertres Lotto and EZ2 Lotto), and the six-digit game. The games were suspended from July 27 to July 30.

The announcement didn't include the promised details on "massive corruption." Most bettors and bet collectors did not care.

* SENATOR TOLENTINO'S BASIS FOR INSISTING DUTERTE DEAL WITH CHINA IS VALID. "Anecdotal reports," Senator Francis Tolentino said, as he didn't know what the Duterte-Xi agreement contained. Senate minority leader Franklin Drilon wondered, How could Tolentino say the pact was valid, or whether the Senate's concurrence was not needed, when the parameters of the deal are not known? "The devil is in the details," Senator Richard Gordon weighed in.

Francis Tolentino has yet to show he is, or can be, another Arturo Tolentino, the late giant of a lawmaker in the Senate.

* 'AKO BA ANG PUMATAY?" From Senator Bato de la Rosa, who said he wouldn't inhibit himself from the Senate investigation on illegal killings. Apparently, he has a different understanding of conflict of interest.

PMA's height requirement

For a person to take the entrance exam of the Philippine Military Academy, minimum height required of the applicant, man or woman, is five feet (152 cm) and maximum height is 6 feet four inches (193.04 cm).

Compare that with the PNP height requirement for one who wants to enroll at the Philippine National Police Academy or to become a policeman/policewoman, jail guard, or firefighter: five feet four inches (162.5 cm.) for men and 5'2" (157.5 cm) for women. No maximum height.

A five footer who graduates from the PMA can join the police force. That must fall under the waiver rule the existing law provides for people with specialized talents.

None for non-uniform cops

PNP may also waive the height requirement for non-uniform personnel. Last May 19, it announced openings for 322 non-uniform positions in the PNP and the line saying "NO HEIGHT REQUIREMENT" was prominently displayed in the job announcement.

Apparently, at times the PNP finds it difficult to recruit people who meet the 5'4" and 5'2" requirement.

'Move on, namo'

Yody Sanchez, a Partido Barug stalwart, teases BOPK partisans: "When Mike Rama lost in 2016, we were told by them, 'Move on, namo.' Now we say the same thing to them."

When Governor Gwen Garcia was asked upon her return to Capitol last June 30 about the "Davide Tower" project, she answered, "it's not my priority." In 2013, Junjun Davide made the same remark when he assumed as governor and was asked about Gwen's CICC project.
