NATIONAL Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Guillermo Eleazar on Friday, August 2, alerted all Metro Manila district commanders on the onslaught of two weather systems in the country after a woman was killed in Quezon City.

Omayra Sumalang was killed after a tree fell on her house in Barangay UP Campus during heavy rains on Friday morning. Her two children survived.

Eleazar directed all police districts in Metro Manila to stay alert and immediately respond to flooding, assist stranded commuters and provide security operations during possible evacuation of residents in flooded areas.

He reminded the police commanders to coordinate with the local government units so they will know what assistance they can extend to in their areas of jurisdiction.

"We should always be on the alert to support LGUs and other government agencies in evacuation and search and rescue operations," Eleazar said.

He said rubber boats and 6 x 6 trucks are on standby if needed.

Various local government units in Metro Manila have cancelled classes due to bad weather on Friday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said a low pressure area (LPA) was spotted at 915 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes around 3 a.m. Friday.

The LPA has enhanced the southwest monsoon and would bring moderate to heavy rains in the provinces of Pangasinan, Zambales and Bataan, as well as scattered rain showers over Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Cordillera, Ilocos and Central Luzon regions.

Bicol Region, Visayas, Caraga and northern Mindoro will have cloudy skies and scattered rain showers and thunderstorms caused by the trough of the LPA.

The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies and isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms, the Pagasa said.

The Metro Manila Development Authority has also issued flood alerts in the areas of España and Taft in Manila, Mandaluyong and Makati due to the continuous rain showers. (SunStar Philippines)
