Cheaper medicines at Generics Pharmacy

THE Generics Pharmacy has reduced the prices of its medicines for heart ailment, high blood pressure and other drugs effective Wednesday morning.

Grecell D. Francisco, store manager of The Generics Pharmacy in Gaisano Mall, said the reduced prices are available at all its 730 branches nationwide.

With the reduction, the pharmacy now sells medicines such as anti-asthma at P673.10 instead of the regular price of around P1,400 and an anti-hypertensive drug at P10.10 from its regular price of P11.80 per tablet.

Francisco said other kinds of medicines are also available at the pharmacy at much reduced prices as she encouraged clients to buy generics which are much cheaper compared with branded ones.

Aside from the price reduction, The Generics Pharmacy is also offering free blood pressure check and medical consultation while blood sugar testing is available at all its pharmacies for only P27.

The Generics Pharmacy was registered in 1949 and managed by a group of Filipino entrepreneurs who began importing and wholesaling pharmaceutical products from some parts of the world such as Peru, United States and Slovenia.

In 1989 when prices of medicines and branded pharmaceutical products soared high, the idea of selling generic products to government hospitals was started by the pharmacy to cater to the less privileged.

Francisco said since most of the people during those times are not yet aware of the generics brands, they continued to buy the more expensive brands.

“By 1989, with the prices of medical and pharmaceutical products soaring, the company decided to sell generic drugs primarily to government hospitals to help the less privileged Filipinos avail of affordable quality medicines,” she said.

She added that to heed the call for cheaper medicines, the generic manufacturer level up its distribution in a wider range so the poor and the less fortunate ones can avail of the same quality of the branded ones.

In compliance with Republic Act 9502 or An Act Providing for Cheaper and Affordable Medicines in 2007, the Generic Pharmacy inked a deal with Francorp, the world leader in franchising, to engineer its franchise development and growth in the Philippines.

Francisco said this is to establish retailer of affordable and effective drugs nationwide.

“The Generics Pharmacy aims to set up accessible branches nationwide so we can help those who are in need,” Francisco added.
