Danilo Lee emerges champ in Calinan Fiesta

UNHERALED Danilo Lee emerged champion in the 2019 Calinan Fiesta Chess Tournament-Open 1800 Below division held at the Barangay Hall of Calinan, Davao City recently.

Lee, seeded 26th, scored perfect five points after drawing a first round bye and beating Quimson Abella, Wilan Vilvestre, Joeawi Dimaampo and Rodel Panuncia in the last four matches of the Swiss System format competition.

Four-pointers Rodel Panuncia and William Ripalda placed second and third, respectively. Panuncia edged three others with superior tiebreaks.

Rounding up the top 10 of the 35-player field were top seed Dimaampo (fourth), Camilo Alcanzar (fifth), Ritchie Tagyamon (sixth), Cristian Billanes (seventh), Lawrence Guanzon (eighth), Chubi Elmer Ranario (ninth) and Edgar Sarabi (10th).

In under-15 unrated category, Venz Saint Christopher Ines made 4.5 points to cop the title over William Ripalda, Jr. (3.5) and Donna May Ferrer (3.5) who took the next two spots.

Ines drew with Ferrer in the fifth round after outclassing Alexandra Mari Calaque, France Gian Calaque, Ripalda and Lance Andrei Lao.
