NTC to assist council on Converge’s ‘slow internet’

THE National Telecommunications Communication in Central Luzon is willing to assist the Angeles City Council in determining the internet speed being provided to customers by Converge ICT Solutions Incorporated.

Regional director Azor Sitchon, who was one of the resource persons during city council legislative inquiry on the Converge billing scheme on Friday, August 2, said his office “is willing to assist the city council” in validating the internet speed being supplied by Converge.

Sitchon, however, said that in the matter of the billing statement, the NTC has no jurisdiction over the said issue.

“The billing issue is not our concern but of course we are willing to assist regarding the speed being provided to subscribers,” Sitchon said.

He said that the NTC can validate the MBPS speed by conducting testing using an app or monitoring equipment.

“We have testing equipment available at our Central Office and NCR office. If the SP requests us (NTC) to do the testing, I could request the equipment to be brought here,” Sitchon said.

He added that his office will soon have its own internet speed testing equipment soon.

Sitchon said his office will also be looking into the contract of the subscribers and provider.

“Rest assured that our office is always willing to help and provide services. We are here to regulate and to make sure that these telcos deliver what the subscribers paid for,” Sitchon added.

At present, Converge is charging P1,500 for 25 MBPS; P2,500 for 75 MBPS and P 3,500 for 150 MBPS.

Earlier, Sitchon also met with other telcos in Region 3 regarding the “slow internet” in school and universities.

Vice Mayor Vicky Vega Cabigting and Councilor Jay Sangil, the main proponents of the legislative inquiry, invited Converge executives to shed light of the billing statement issue.

“Converge should have informed their customers on the new billing scheme that they implemented. Many of their subscribers where confused because of this,” Vega said. (Chris Navarro)
