THREE Jose Maria College (JMC) teams eked out victories in the opener of 34th Kadayawan Sports Festival Inter-High School Beach Volleyball Tournament 2019 at the Felis Beach Resort Complex Saturday, August 3.

JMC-C of Martina Miles Dennison and Lussel Mae Solis, who both hail from Digos City, posted back-to-back wins in the two-day event organized by the Davao Volleyball Association (Dava) and sponsored by the Davao City government through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO).

JMC-C whipped University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC)-A of Hanna Mae Ortiz and Trixie Alysson Segarino, 21-13, after beating Maryknoll of Lupon-A (MKL-A) of Dianne Grace Cabantao and Elaiza Kate Lapiz, 21-16.

Grade 11 student Dennison, 16, in an interview after the match against UIC-A, said she and Solis paired for the first time in beach volleyball and it was also their first Kadayawan title bid.

“Malakas din mga kasamahan naming teams like JMC-A and JMC-B but we will still do our best in the tournament,” Dennison said, adding they only needed to win their last game in the bracket to lead it and earn a slot to the quarterfinals.

JCM-A, composed of Keith Claire Guma and Angelique Alia, drew first blood by routing Team Ka’s Kayla Stephanie Estana and Princess Anaver Alcuizar of the Assumption College of Davao (ACD), 21-10, while JMC-B of Edlyn Jade Doncillo and Ferlyn Gea Limbaga demolished Team Bang-ACD’s Ruby Jean Labigas and Angelo Maskarino, 21-14.

In other matches, San Pedro College (SPC) Stallions’ Sheena Marie Lao and Yuoka Watanabe bested MKL-B’s Bein Alingalan and Jonna Nermal, 21-11 while UIC-A survived past Santo Tomas National High School’s Kristel Gumapac and Dennz Relox, 21-16.

A total of 28 teams joined the volleyfest that also has a boys division.
