Fetalvero: Changes need to be made

KEEPING up with the pace of development and playing catch up are twin challenges every administrator face.

The massive infrastructure projects being undertaken by the Duterte administration is no doubt indicative of the catch up to fast-track everything in order to cope with the demand. The usual excuses by government for the lack of manpower and insufficient funds can no longer explain the disproportion between population and social and public services. Citizens stand to lose in the equation. I blame the inadequacy to corruption in government.

Red flags that remained unheeded hampered agricultural development. Serious threats such as global warming and climate change were not addressed with urgency. Little has been done to improve our irrigation systems and flood control.

Importation of agricultural products should be a last resort and not a primary remedial measure. Self-sufficiency and sustainability should be our goal. As part of detoxification and rehabilitation, have drug addicts till government lands to increase food production.

Our overseas Filipino workers remit millions of pesos but at what cost? Families live apart, not to mention the dozens who experience abuse. Bring home our professionals by offering incentives. Take advantage of the emergence of young inventors with potential to improve our country through innovative ways.

Had our previous leaders envisioned the spread of development to the rural areas instead of concentration in the metropolitan, we will not be facing the problem of informal settlers and congestion. An “iron fist” to impose discipline must not result to economic displacement. Offer alternatives.

Lack of foresight by those tasked to manage two valuable commodities resulted to insufficient water supply and rotational brown outs to the inconvenience of consumers. We cannot rely on rain for our water supply. Please build those much needed dams.

Allowing the trafficking of illegal drugs like shabu (methamphetamine) into our country is itself a violation of our right to be a drug-free nation. How are we to rectify a drug problem that has gotten out of hand? Police visibility is still the best deterrent to criminality. Instead of restoring death penalty, restore trust to our justice system.

Political will is not enough. Streamline the process of management. Every Filipino has to toe the line if we want some changes.

If we keep doing today what we did yesterday, there is no brighter future ahead.
