FOR a decade now, beer market leader San Miguel Brewery, Inc. stayed true to its commitment to serve as good stewards of the environment by continuing its re-greening initiatives held in Barangay Handumanan in Bacolod City and a separate tree planting activity held in Mandaue, Cebu, Saturday, August 3, 2019.

The Bacolod plant officers and employees also had their share in this initiative anchored on its “Tree Brew Life” program by planting seedlings in Barangay Handumanan in collaboration with the local organizations such as the Negros Press Club, Rotary Club of Bacolod - Central, Negros Economic Development Foundation and Barangay Council of Handumanan.

SMB adopted 3,000 square meters of the NEDF park which is envisioned as a model conservation-oriented and interactive learning environment for urban communities in Metro Bacolod.

This is already its 10th year and on top of the two areas that held first its re-greening efforts, there are other tree planting activities in the different locations across the country where the said company operates.

The re-greening efforts kicked off in Bacolod City and Mandaue, Cebu last Saturday to be followed by activities in Valenzuela, Laguna, Davao and Angeles.

Under San Miguel Brewery’s flagship Buhayin ang Kalikasan, the nationwide environmental program has succeeded in planting a million seedlings since its inceptions.

This year, around 70,000 seedlings of hardwood, mangrove and fruit-bearing species will be planted in identified areas by officers and employees of the company.

“It is not only about planting trees, but it is also about brewing the foundation of life for generations to come,” said SMB President Roberto N. Huang.

This year, we will focus on re-greening parks and communal areas and adopt forest parks so that we will have more green spaces where our families can commune with nature. Our watersheds and forests are a valuable source of water, food, shelter, and a host of other benefits that offer immeasurable impact on our lives and that of future generations, he said.

The project aims to protect, preserve and rehabilitate forest covers in both urban and rural settings and aid in regenerating mangrove areas in coastal communities. Another purpose of the initiative is to ensure the availability of water supply in the communities where the company operates.

SMB looks to further boost its environmental efforts to keep in line with San Miguel Corporation’s pledge in adapting water sustainability measures in all of its businesses.

Conducting this re-greening program coincides with our mother company’s direction to propagate water sustainability. There is no question that water is essential in our business and trees are the means by which we can secure ample supply of it for years to come, Huang said.

Aside from environmental concerns, SMB is also actively involved in programs that promote education, health and basic services and livelihood.
