HANNA (Lekima), the eighth cyclone to have entered the Philippine area of responsibility this year, is expected to intensify into a severe tropical storm within 24 hours but is less likely to make landfall in any part of the country.

As of 10 a.m. Monday, August 5, the storm's eye/center was located at 875 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, with maximum sustained winds of up to 85 kilometers per hour (kh/h) and gusts of up to 105 km/h, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

It added that Hanna continues to move north northwest at 15 km/h.

Pagasa said that Monday (August 5) and Tuesday (August 6), moderate to heavy monsoon rains will be experienced over the northern portion of Palawan (including Calamian and Cuyo Islands), Mindoro Provinces, Romblon, and Western Visayas.

Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will be experienced over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, and the rest of Mimaropa and Visayas, it added.

The weather bureau advised residents in the aforementioned areas, especially those living in places identified as highly susceptible to floods and rain-induced landslides, to take precautionary measures.

They were also advised to coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices and continue monitoring for updates from Pagasa.

Fisherfolk and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the western seaboards of northern Luzon and Central Luzon, the seaboards of southern Luzon and Visayas, and the eastern seaboard of Mindanao due to potentially rough sea condition.

Pagasa said that Hanna is expected to be at 815 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes by Tuesday morning, August 6, and outside the Philippine area of responsibility by Saturday morning, August 9.

As of Monday afternoon, no tropical cyclone wind signal has been issued. (EZN/SunStar Philippines)
