Prices of fruit continue to drop

WITH the harvest season, the prices of selected fruits have dropped as of August 5, 2019.

Based on the price monitoring of SunStar Davao at the Bankerohan Public Market, the prices of durian, mangosteen and marang have dropped compared to its previous prices.

Depending on the variety, the prices of durian now ranges from P60 per kilogram (kg) to P100/kg. The D101 is currently at P60/kilogram from P100/kg to P120/kg last week. Arancillo is also at P60/kg from P100/kg a week ago. Puyat is at P100/kg from around P250/kg to P300/kg around a month ago. At the Magsaysay Fruit Vendors Association, Puyat is at P90/kg.

Vendors are expecting the prices to continue to drop in the coming months. Prices in the coming months are forecast to be as low as P40/kg to P50/kg. The durian fruits being sold at the Bankerohan Public Market and at the Magsaysay Fruit Vendors Association are coming from Calinan and Toril, Davao City.

Earlier, Durian Industry Council of Davao City (DICDC) president Larry Miculob said they are expecting the prices of durian to drop to as low as P25/kg as the harvest season peaks.

“Price may range to as low as P25 for street vendors up to P60 at known durian-selling outlets depending on varieties. And we are looking at a much lower price compared last year,” Miculob said.

Mangosteen is currently at the peak of its harvest season as boxes of the fruit are being offloaded from trucks at the Bankerohan Public Market. Half a kilogram of the fruit is currently being sold at P12 to P15. The fruit is at P40/kg to P50/kg this week from P200/kg to P250/kg a month ago.

Meanwhile, marang is currently being sold at P50/kg from P70/kg to P80/kg a week ago.
