Alvarez: Negative effects of substance abuse

SOME people use drugs just to feel better or to deal with stress, while others try it for experimentation purposes or just want to be accepted in a group without knowing that tolerance may develop over time leading to drug addiction.

While it is true that drugs can affect the way a person sees, hears, smells, moves, eats, thinks, and sleeps but not everyone knows the ill effects of the use of illegal drugs.

One of these addictive substances is the popular shabu or methamphetamine hydrochloride made of ephedrine that causes brain damage. Not everyone knows but it also has harmful corrosive chemicals and cancer-causing agents.

Symptoms of shabu use include eye twitching, emotional instability, repetitive behavior, persistent drug cravings, weight loss, and even changing priorities. Worst is that they are observed to be most of the time in paranoia.

Another is the ecstasy, also known as a stimulant and at the same time hallucinogenic. Most said that it was invented in 1913 as an appetite suppressant. However, it is now a commonly abused drug that causes feelings of exhilaration and rush after 20 minutes of ingestion and later can heighten perceptions. A lot of people reported that it exaggerates sounds heard and drives them to dance crazily.

In addition is the marijuana, known to be a mind-altering psychogenic drug produced by Cannabis sativa plant. When it is smoked, it increases the heart rate, alters blood pressure and senses and at the same time causes hallucinations. It also acts as a gateway to more hard drugs like shabu, ecstasy, etc.

All these drugs do not solely hurt our bodies but also our souls. It affects us spiritually as it is against the will of God and psychosocially as it is clearly damaging affecting all aspects of our whole being.

Lastly, it changes our behavior and causes us to commit crimes.

Oh, I should say... Let us all choose to say no to drugs, as use of illegal drugs takes anybody to hell disguised as heaven.
