SM Foundation to train farmers

SM FOUNDATION Inc. will launch the Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Farmers’ Training Program in Brgy. San Nicolas, Cebu City on Aug. 14, 2019.

Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Urban Farmers’ Training Program is a 12-week activity with lectures and hands-on training.

The program is made possible with the foundation’s partners—Macondray Philippines, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of Agriculture, the Local Government Unit of Cebu City, SM Market and SM Supermalls.

Participants will be taught about high-value crops, and how to grow safe and sustainable crops, vegetables and fruits in their backyards.

The training would benefit those persons who have little knowledge on farming.

It promises to provide inputs on how aspiring farmers can become entrepreneurs despite economic challenges, limited planting spaces and resources, and changing weather conditions.

Since the program’s creation in 2007, SM Foundation Inc. has been able to reach out to more than 23,000 marginalized families all around the country, and has provided them opportunities in food security and sustainable agriculture.

After the 12-week training, SM Foundation Inc. and the farmers will celebrate the bountiful harvest. Buyers are encouraged to try their high-value crops.

The farmers will be given the opportunity to observe the operations and product presentation of fruits and vegetables at SM, while SM will work with farmers and link them to markets or to SM Markets’ suppliers.
