Lawmaker eyes strict solid waste management implementation

THE Talino at Galing ng Pinoy (TGP) party-list, in line with its Tayo’y Gabay Pangkalikasan slogan, is seeking the strict implementation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 in the country.

Representative Jose Teves, Jr. of the TGP partylist, said the strict implementation is aimed to strengthen the collection of recyclable materials down to the village level.

Teves said the move is in support to the program on environment protection of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Meanwhile, Teves said he filed a bill that will totally ban the importation of recyclable materials into the country.

He said the total ban will protect the Philippines from becoming a dumping ground of recyclable materials from developed countries.

The representative added that tons of recyclable materials had been shipped into the country from Canada, Australia, South Korea, and Hong Kong in the past years.

The recyclable materials included pieces of assorted scrap plastic, cellophane, wrappers, chunks of hard plastic, textiles, fibers, wood chips, glass cullet, stones, soil, paper and other shredded waste materials.

Teves said the total ban will also strengthen the promotion of waste segregation at source in line Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
