Gale warning in Central Visayas still up: Pagasa

FOR the third straight day, the state weather bureau has not lifted its gale warning over the entire Central Visayas, affecting several scheduled boat trips on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued the warning that cautioned seafarers, fishermen and residents of coastal villages that the sustained winds at sea have speeds between 34-47 knots, forceful enough to overturn small boats and damage houses.

Al Quiblat, Pagasa Visayas officer-in-charge, said Central Visayas has been experiencing between 50 to 60 kilometer per hour (kph) wind speeds in the past few days, causing waves to reach between three to four feet in the air.

On Tuesday, the coast guard cancelled 49 boat trips from Cebu to Bohol, Leyte, Negros, Panay and other islands in the region.

However, on the same day, fastcraft Ocean Jet’s management announced that its trips to Tagbiliran City, Bohol and Ormoc City, Leyte from Cebu City and vice versa had resumed.

Also the Pagasa Visayas reported that Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor and Negros Oriental will continue to experience scattered rainshowers and strong winds until Friday, Aug. 9.

The southwest monsoon, which is prevalent in the second half of the year, has brought in the ugly weather.

In a forecast aired at 4 p.m. Tuesday, the Pagasa national office reported that tropical cyclone Hanna intensified into a severe tropical storm.

Hanna was last detected 795 kilometers east of Calayan town, Cagayan, Luzon; it has no chance of making landfall, according to Quiblat.

Hanna, which had 95 kph winds, was moving north-northwest at 10 kph. It could gust up to 115 kph.

Quiblat said Hanna is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Friday.

The Pagasa weather experts are also monitoring a low pressure area in the West Philippine Sea, but this has a small chance of developing into a tropical depression, Quiblat said. (From HBL of SuperBalita Cebu, KAL)
