Classes in Bacolod resume today

CLASSES in Bacolod City resumed today, August 7, after it was suspended Tuesday afternoon (August 6) due to monsoon rains brought about by Severe Tropical Storm Hanna.

Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, who was an acting mayor Tuesday, issued Executive Order 21, declaring the suspension of classes Tuesday afternoon in preschool, elementary, and high school including the junior high and senior high school in Bacolod.

Familiaran said he issued the suspension of classes upon the recommendation of City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) due to inclement weather brought about by Hanna.

"We want to ensure the safety of our children," he said.

He added that Mayor Evelio Leonardia was in Manila Tuesday for the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected officers of the National President of the League of Cities of the Philippines, where Leonardia was elected as president.

Executive Assistant Jose Maria Vargas, head of the cluster of DRRMO, said Bacolod only experienced monsoon rains brought about by Hanna.

Due to the heavy downpour, he said some trees were also uprooted and fell on the roads in various barangays.

He added the personnel of DRRMO were also on full alert to monitor the 61 barangays in the city.
