THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has finished the repair and rehabilitation of 308 municipal facilities that were destroyed during the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) in 2013.

The list includes 98 civic centers, 103 municipal halls, 106 public markets and one DILG regional field office in Mimaropa, Bicol Region and Western, Central and Eastern Visayas regions.

DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said on Wednesday, August 7, that the repairs cost P1.278 billion.

These facilities, which were within the 50-kilometer radius of the devastating typhoon, comprised the first batch of projects under the DILG’s Recovery Assistance for Yolanda (RAY) program.

“With the completed municipal facilities, we are very optimistic that our new sets of municipal leaders in the Yolanda-affected areas can now provide normal government services to their constituents,” he said.

“We also expect that there will be more vibrant buying and selling activities in the completed public markets as well as other events and gatherings in civic centers now that they have better and sturdier structures than before,” he added.

Año clarified that the DILG handles only the repair of local government facilities and not the housing programs which are being imple, emted by other national government agencies. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo/SunStar Philippines)
