PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has declared Monday, Aug. 12, 2019, a regular holiday in observance of Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on Thursday morning, Aug. 8, confirmed that the President had signed Proclamation 789.

Republic Act 9849 already states that Eid al-Adha shall be celebrated as a regular holiday along with Eid al-Fitr.

Eid al-Adha is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated by Muslims around the world and is considered holier than Eid al-Fitr.

The Islamic festival commemorates the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command.

According to Wikipedia, “Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of the 12th month of the Islamic lunar calendar known as Dhul-Hijjah. Islam uses the lunar calendar so the date for Eid changes every year.”

Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) 7 Director Salome Siaton reminded employers to follow the pay rules for regular holidays.

Workers who will be working on Aug. 12 shall be paid 200 percent of their daily wage for the first eight hours. If they don’t work on that day, they still will receive 100 percent of their daily wage.

Siaton said that for workers to avail themselves of regular holiday pay, they must be present during the last working day prior to the regular holiday. If not, their leave of absence shall be with pay.

For work done in excess of eight hours or overtime work, workers should be paid an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate, she said.

“There is another computation to be followed for work done during a regular holiday that also falls on the worker’s rest day. In this case, he or she should be paid an additional 30 percent of his or her basic wage of 200 percent,” Siaton said.
