‘Lechon Festival’ continues to delight Cebu locals, tourists

CEBU continues to captivate tourists by the thousands from all over the country and the world, thanks to its rich culture, tradition and attractions.

Indeed, various sectors have been contributing in their own ways to help preserve the pacific island’s urban, rural charm. With this in mind, The Mactan Newtown—in partnership with the City Government of Lapu-Lapu and the Department of Tourism Region 7—hosts another festival highlighting one of the most popular Cebuano delightful dishes: Lechon.

The Lechon Festival is usually celebrated annually at around August. This year, it is from Aug. 9 to 12 at The Mactan Newtown.

While most Filipinos concur that the best lechon is found in Cebu, the competition for the “best” lechon-maker is perennially a subject for debate. Some say that the best lechon is in Talisay City, while others say it is in the City of Carcar. This is where The Lechon Festival comes in handy, as it gathers several lechon-makers in the island for a single event. This gastronomic and cultural celebration will delight festival-goers with its authentic Cebuano fiesta experience.

According to Tefel Pesigan-Valentino, head of marketing and business development for Megaworld Lifestlye Malls, it is also the company’s aim to raise awareness for small-scale and low-commercialized business. The festival will be a great opportunity to showcase their products. In fact, thanks to the festival, there are backyard lechon-makers who are now able to compete with the more popular lechon-makers.

The Department of Tourism supports these kinds of events as they are a great platform to showcase what a place like Cebu has to offer not just in the Philippines but to the whole world.

Ed Mendez, Lapu-Lapu City Tourism officer, revealed that there will be a Guitar Festival happening sometime in September, and will showcase the best ukelele players in Lapu-Lapu City.
